Signs to look for

When it is time for new guttering

Repairs stop making sense once the whole system is on its way out.

Cracks in more than one place

One crack is a repair. Splits appearing along several lengths mean the plastic has gone brittle in the sun, and the next hard frost will open up more.

Rust along cast iron

Orange streaks and flaking along the underside of cast iron gutters mean the metal is thinning. Once it rusts through, no amount of sealant will hold it.

New fascias going on

Replacing the fascia boards is the natural moment for new gutters too, because the old ones have to come down anyway and rarely go back up cleanly.

Gutters too small for the roof

Water shooting over the front in every heavy shower, with no blockage to blame, means the gutter is too shallow for the roof area it has to drain.

How we do it

How we fit new guttering

Patrick measures every run and downpipe, checks the fascia boards the new brackets will fix to and photographs anything that needs sorting first. He then talks you through the profiles. Half round suits most semis and terraces, square carries a little more water and sits neatly on modern houses, and ogee has the moulded front that keeps the look of old cast iron. You pick the profile, and the price is agreed before we order a single length.

On the day, the team takes down the old gutters and downpipes, clears the fixings and fits new brackets along a string line so the fall is true. New lengths, unions, angles, stop ends and outlets go up, then the downpipes are fitted with offsets and clips down to the gully or shoe. We water-test every run, take the old system away with us and leave your paths and drive clear.

  • Half round, square or ogee uPVC
  • New downpipes, offsets and shoes down to the gully
  • Brackets set to a string line for a true fall
  • Old gutters and downpipes removed and taken away
  • Every run water-tested before we leave

New gutters for Croydon's older houses

A lot of Croydon still drains through cast iron. The Victorian terraces off the A23 through Thornton Heath and Norbury, and the Edwardian villas in Addiscombe, were built with it, and some still carry the ogee profile they went up with. Where that iron has rusted through, a uPVC ogee keeps the period look without the repainting. The 1930s semis in Selsdon, Sanderstead and South Croydon suit half round, and square sits well on the post-war houses in New Addington and on newer extensions everywhere.

Your options

Which gutter profile is right for you?

Three uPVC profiles cover almost every house in Croydon, and each one has its place.

Half round

The classic curved gutter. It is easy to keep clean, neat on most roofs and the profile most semis and terraces in south London already have. It is also the simplest to match when only part of the run is changing.

Best for: Semis, terraces and bungalows

Square

A flat-bottomed, square-fronted gutter that holds a little more water than half round of the same width. It gives a crisp line along modern fascias and suits extensions and newer houses.

Best for: Modern houses and extensions

Ogee

Moulded to copy the stepped face of old cast iron, so a Victorian or Edwardian house keeps looking right. It carries plenty of water and sits tight against the fascia board.

Best for: Period houses replacing cast iron

Cost

What drives the cost of new guttering

The biggest factor is length: how many metres of gutter and how many downpipes your house needs. Height comes next, because a three-storey terrace needs more access equipment than a bungalow. The profile you choose, any fascia repairs underneath and whether old cast iron has to come down all feed in. Patrick measures up for free and fixes the price with you before anything is ordered.

What sets the price

  • Metres of gutter and number of downpipes
  • Number of storeys and access
  • Half round, square or ogee profile
  • Fascia repairs before the new brackets go on
  • Taking down and removing cast iron
  • Number of corners, outlets and offsets

New guttering questions

How much does it cost to replace guttering?

The cost to replace guttering depends on the length of the runs, the number of downpipes, the height of the house and the profile you choose. Taking down old cast iron adds time, and so does any rotten fascia that has to be replaced first. Patrick measures it all on a free visit, shows you photos of the existing gutters and agrees a fixed price with you. That price is what you pay.

Which is better, half round or square guttering?

Square guttering carries slightly more water than half round of the same width, so it suits bigger roof areas and modern houses. Half round is the traditional shape and matches most older houses in south London. Both last well in uPVC. Patrick looks at your roof area and your neighbours' gutters and recommends the one that works and looks right on your house.

Can you replace cast iron gutters with uPVC?

Yes. We take down the cast iron, which is heavy and has to come off carefully, and fit uPVC in its place. An ogee profile keeps the look of the original on a Victorian or Edwardian house, and half round suits most 1930s homes. The old iron goes away with us, and you never have to paint a gutter again.

Do new gutters come with new downpipes?

Yes, on most replacements the downpipes are changed at the same time. An old downpipe in a different profile rarely joins cleanly to a new outlet, and cracked or rusted pipes leak down the wall. We fit new downpipes with offsets and clips and carry them down to the gully or shoe. Patrick will tell you if an existing downpipe is sound enough to keep.

Does new guttering need planning permission?

No. Replacing gutters and downpipes on a house is maintenance and does not need planning permission in England. The exceptions are a listed building, or a house in a conservation area where an Article 4 direction controls external changes, and there it is worth a quick check with the council before switching cast iron to plastic. Patrick will flag it if your road looks likely to be covered.

Will new gutters stop water getting behind the fascia?

Yes, when they are hung correctly. Water gets behind the fascia when the gutter sits too low or the roof felt at the eaves stops short of the gutter. We hang the new gutter so the tiles overhang it properly, and where the felt at the eaves has perished, Patrick will show you in the photos and include the fix in your price.
