Signs to look for

When fibreglass is the right roof

GRP earns its place on roofs that work hard.

You step out onto the roof

If you climb out onto a flat roof to clean windows or clear gutters, a rigid GRP surface stands up to feet far better than felt or rubber.

Awkward shapes and upstands

Roofs with lots of corners, pipes and rooflights are where joints fail. GRP forms around them in one piece, with nothing to peel back.

Felt that failed twice

If the felt has already been renewed once and let you down again, a hard shell that does not crack in frost is worth the step up.

Seen from upstairs windows

Dormers and extension roofs you look down on every day look far tidier in a smooth, coloured topcoat than in patched felt.

Hairline cracks in old GRP

Cracks in an older fibreglass roof come from thin laminate or a deck that moves. Relaying on a stable deck with proper trims sorts it.

How we do it

How a GRP roof is laid

Patrick surveys the roof and photographs the deck, upstands and outlets, then talks you through how GRP suits the way you use the roof. The price is fixed there and then. GRP needs dry weather and mild temperatures to cure properly, so it goes on during a dry spell and never into the rain. If the old roof is leaking in the meantime, it is made watertight first.

The old covering is stripped and a new OSB3 deck goes down, with every board joint taped. Pre-formed GRP trims are fixed at the edges and walls. Resin is rolled onto the boards, then a layer of chopped strand glass mat is laid in and wetted out with more resin until it is fully saturated. Once that laminate cures, a coloured topcoat seals it. The result is one continuous, hard surface. Waste is removed and payment is on completion.

  • Glass mat and resin laminate
  • Pre-formed GRP edge trims
  • Coloured topcoat finish
  • Walkable, hard-wearing surface
  • Flat roofs fully guaranteed

GRP roofs on Croydon homes

Croydon's loft conversions and rear extensions add up to a lot of flat roof that people look down on or step out onto. A GRP finish suits the box dormers on Victorian terraces in Norbury and Thornton Heath, where every roof shape is a little different, and the kitchen extensions behind 1930s semis in Sanderstead and Purley. With the Downs to the south and the wind that comes with them, a hard shell with bonded edges that cannot lift or flap earns its keep.

Cost

How a GRP roof is priced

GRP is priced on area, detail and the deck. Every corner, upstand, rooflight and outlet takes extra laminate and trim, so a busy roof costs more per square metre than a plain rectangle. A new OSB3 deck is part of most GRP jobs, because the laminate needs a stable base. Topcoat colour and any insulation add to it. Once Patrick has agreed the figure with you, that is what goes on the final bill.

What sets the price

  • Roof area
  • Corners, upstands and rooflights
  • New OSB3 deck
  • Trims and outlets
  • Topcoat colour
  • Warm deck insulation

GRP fibreglass roofing questions

Is GRP better than EPDM?

GRP is better for roofs you walk on or that have awkward shapes, and EPDM is better for plain roofs you rarely touch. Both last for decades when they are laid well. GRP gives a hard, coloured finish. EPDM is flexible, flame-free and a little quicker to lay. Patrick recommends one based on how you use the roof, not on which suits the team.

Can GRP be laid in cold weather?

GRP needs dry weather and mild temperatures to cure, so it is not laid in rain, in frost or on a damp deck. Resin that cures too cold or too wet stays tacky and can fail. Spring to autumn is the best window. In winter the team waits for a dry, mild spell and makes a leaking roof watertight in the meantime.

Does a GRP roof crack?

A properly laid GRP roof on a stable deck does not crack, but a thin laminate on a moving deck will. Cracks come from cutting corners: too little resin, no trims, or chipboard that flexes underfoot. Apex lay GRP on OSB3 with the right weight of laminate and fitted trims, so the shell stays whole.

How do you repair a GRP roof?

Small cracks and damage on GRP are repaired by grinding back, laying new mat and resin over the area and topcoating to match. A patch done this way bonds into the original laminate, so the repair becomes part of the shell. If cracks run across the whole roof, the deck underneath is the real problem and needs replacing.

Can a GRP roof be any colour?

A GRP topcoat comes in several colours, with dark grey, light grey and green common choices on house roofs. The colour goes on as the final coat over the laminate, so it is part of the roof and not a coat of paint. Pick something that works with the house, because you will see it from the upstairs windows.
