If he spots anything bigger while he is up there, such as a cracked length, a slipped tile or a gap behind the fascia, he shows you the picture and tells you what it needs. You decide. How much does gutter cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the height of your house, the length of guttering and how badly it is blocked. A single-storey run is quicker than a three-storey terrace with a rear valley, and gutters packed with years of silt take longer than a light clean. Patrick gives you a fixed price before the team starts, and that is the price you pay, with nothing added at the end.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once a year suits most houses, best done in late autumn after the leaves have come down. Homes under big trees, which covers a lot of Shirley, Sanderstead and Purley, do better with a second clean in spring once the seed cases and blossom have dropped. If you can see plants growing along the gutter or water spilling over in rain, yours is due now.
Can you seal my gutters while you clean them?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. Once a gutter is empty, a dripping joint can be dried, cleaned back and sealed properly, which cannot be done while it is full of silt. Patrick checks each union as the run is cleared, points out any that are leaking and seals them on the same visit, at the price you agreed.
Can blocked gutters cause damp inside the house?
Yes. A blocked gutter overflows down the face of the wall or backs up behind the fascia, and both push water into the brickwork. Over a winter that shows up as damp patches on bedroom walls, mould around windows and rot in the fascia boards. Clearing the gutters and fixing any leaking joints stops the water at source, and it costs far less than treating the damp afterwards.
Do you clear valley and parapet gutters?
Yes. Many Victorian terraces in Croydon, Streatham and South Norwood have a valley gutter running between two roof slopes that drains to a hopper at the back of the house.
